I know. One of a kind.

Ever hear of the Eighth Air Force? In WWII, there was a fighter group(the 364th) in the 1st air division. I know a bunch of them through reunions. They might be pushing 80 or so, but watch out. They're still as fiesty as they were when they were twenty-something. I decided to try an honor them by making a presentation humidor for one of their raffles.

This one is approximately 9" x 12" x 1.5" deep, and made of a piece of blond heart Redwood, something I don't see much of. In addition, I got ahold of a "top secret" document for the lid insert. It shows the markings of the airplanes(bombers and fighters) in the first air division. This particular member belonged to the 385th fighter squadron, and flew Mustangs. He "liberated" this document from the wall in the ready room when he left Honington, England. I discovered it, and determined it would make an outstanding humidor lid, and duplicated it for that purpose.

There was quite a buzz at the reunion over this one. Most of the pilots hadn't seen this chart in over fifty years! But they all picked out their aircraft's nose and tail markings in a heartbeat(white spinner; blue & white stripes).

The winner of the raffle? A woman whose brother was killed in the Remy raid. I couldn't pry it out of her hands even for a picture! Said she'd treasure it forever.

I'm glad I made it now...
